Labor Day weekend is upon us! Whether you have a 3 day weekend or even 4 you are ready to watch some sports! Here is my list of games to watch, or follow if you don’t get them on TV. Here we go!
All times in PST//All Records/Standings are accurate as of Thursday 8/29
Friday August 30th:
Brewers @ Cubs 11:20 AM
Do you have a 4 day weekend? This one’s for you people out there with Friday off and sports to watch. And it is a good game no less! A nice Divisional matchup, that could mix up Wild Card and Divisional standings. With the teams 3.5 games apart, this game could be influential in the future. Coming off a nice start, Chase Anderson is ready to face the career long Chicagoan Jose Quintana.
Wisconsin 19 @ South Florida 4:00 PM
College football fans have two Top 25 options at the 4:00 hour, Tulsa @ Michigan St. 18 being the other option, but this is the one to watch. After starting out the 2018 season ranked at 4, but finishing at a disappointing 8-5, Wisconsin has something to prove this year. Junior Jack Coan looks to start the Badgers off on the right foot, as Senior Blake Barnett of the Bulls, is focused on a Week 1 upset. His 3 double digit 4th quarter comebacks from last year, has many betters looking to the underdogs for some quick cash.
Athletics @ Yankees 4:05 PM
After the A’s shocked the Yanks earlier this month in a three game sweep, they look to do much of the same here. In a pitching matchup of CC Sabathia and Brett Anderson, the balls could begin to fly, as the Yankees look for revenge.
Mets @ Phillies 4:10 PM
Another divisional matchup that also could affect the wild card. 2.5 games apart and both currently out of the NL’s top 5, each looks for the upper hand. Coming off a no decision, Zach Wheeler aims to outlast Phil’s ace Aaron Nola.
Indians @ Rays 4:10 PM
To add on the steller 4 PM hour the Indians and Rays face off in a crucial, AL wild card matchup. With the Indians currently “In” and the Rays a game back of the Oakland A’s this series might be looked back on as October nears. As the innovator of the opener, Rays, don’t have an official announced starter, The Indians have All Star Game MVP, Shane (NOT JUSTIN) Bieber, expected to take the mound.
Saturday August 31st:
Florida Atlantic @ Ohio State 5 9:00 AM
Wake up and smell the gridiron?? You betcha. While the the top 25 games aren’t marquee at the 9:00 hour, the other two being: Northern Iowa @ Iowa St 21 and South Alabama @ Nebraska 24, this one should be the most entertaining. While it doesn’t look likely that Lane Kiffin’s FAU will put up much of a fight, it will be interesting how the new Buckeyes pieces fit in. After departures to the NFL of Dwayne Haskins, Mike Weber, Paris Campbell, Nick Bosa, Dre’Mont Jones, and others, they need the remaining and new Buckeye’s need to step up. Georgia transfer, Justin Fields looks to fill in, for the Redskins first rounder Dwayne Haskins, at QB as the Buckeyes look to retain their claim as NCAA powerhouse.
Athletics @ Yankees 10:05 AM
The best baseball game to watch in between the college football matchups would be this one, right before the hot college football games. These two could potentially face off in the first round of the playoffs in October. In game 2 of the series, Homer Bailey faces Domingo Germán in a possible pitchers duel.
Duke @ Alabama 2 12:30 PM
After coming off a College Football Playoff runner up finish, Alabama looks to go all the way, as they seem to do year after year. They are sure to CRUSH unranked Duke, basketball would be a completely different story, as Tua Tagovailoa looks to show why he deserves the Heisman early on. Somebody else to watch will be Alabama RB Najee Harris. With Damien Harris and Josh Jacobs finally gone to the NFL, the former number 1 overall recruit and Antioch native, looks to run his way to the future.
Northwestern @ Stanford 25 1:00 PM
Four years after Northwestern shocked the McCaffrey lead Stanford, to beat them 16-6, Stanford wants redemption. That loss ultimately cost the Cardinal a trip to the College Football playoffs. Cardinal senior, K.J. Costello looks to out duel the Northwestern tandem QB’s of Hunter Johnson and TJ Green, in the best afternoon game of the week.
Oregon 11 @ Auburn 16 4:30 PM
Justin Herbert surprised many with the decision to stay at Oregon for his senior year, after being a projected surefire 1st round pick in the NFL Draft. Now he is apart of the best college football matchup in week one. On the other hand, the Tigers have true freshman Bo Nix making his first start. This game could be very important at College Football Playoff selection time, with these upper echelon programs bound for success.
Sunday September 1st:
Athletics @ Yankees 10:05 AM
In the finale of the series, both teams will try to pull ahead. I predict it will be 1-1 up to this game, and it will be a must watch. Mike Fiers faces J.A. Happ in a good pitching matchup for a top American League faceoff, on an American holiday.
Indians @ Rays 10:10 AM
This is the last game of the series, which certainly could shake up the wild card. Depending on what has happened in the series up to this point, it could have different outlooks on the current playoff picture. Adam Plutko faces Ray’s ace Charlie Morton in an interesting matchup.
Brewers @ Cubs 11:20 AM
Another closeout game here. This could change the National League Central, especially because the two teams play each other again next Thursday to start a 4 game series. The outlook on the Central could change completely based on the results. The matchup of, both once elite, pitchers in Gio Gonzalez and Yu Darvish could contribute to a high scoring game.
Mets @ Phillies 4:08 PM
A fourth big, series closeout matchup of the day. Both teams seem out of the National League East race, with Atlanta and Washington in control. This could still change the Wild Card standings, with both teams within the top 5 of the race. Newly acquired Marcus Stroman looks to prove he was worth the move, vs Zack Eflin.
Houston @ Oklahoma 4 4:30 PM
After the departure of Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray, to NFL, the Sooners look to Jalen Hurts at QB. The former Alabama starter has big shoes to fill with the prior two Oklahoma QB’s, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, winning the Heisman and being selected number 1 overall in the NFL draft. Hurts will try to prove himself, as one of the most underrated QB’s in the nation, D’Eriq King will try to upset the powerhouse.
Monday September 2nd:
Mets @ Nationals 10:05 AM
A divisional matchup that is very important for the Wild Card. As of Thursday the Nats would be in and the Mets would be out. This matchup could be the boost the Metropolitans need as two of the best pitchers in the league, Noah Syndergaard(Thor) and Max Scherzer(Mad Max) face off in what’s sure to be a pitchers duel.
Astros @ Brewers 1:10 PM
A great interleague matchup, with two teams trying to gain leverage before October. The Astros are looking to improve so the can pass the Yankees and take first place in the American League. On the other hand the Brew Crew is trying to get into the wild card, and pass the Cubs and Cardinals in the National League Central. Ace, and potential hottest commodity of the upcoming offseason, Gerrit Cole faces Adrian Houser in this matchup.
Notre Dame 9 @ Louisville 5:00 PM
In the only Power 5 game on Monday, the Fighting Irish face the Cardinal. Senior Ian Book looks to bring Notre Dame back to the College Football playoffs, with beating Louisville being the first step on the road. With new coach Scott Satterfield, the Cardinal are hoping to improve on their 2-10 record of last year, and try to upset Dame.
Amazing breakdown of tons of games for the weekend. Great article!
