Nick’s Very Late NBA Mock Draft 2020

After a long wait, the 2020 NBA Draft is finally here. This Wednesday, teams will make big steps towards the future of their organization. Months of projecting, predicting, and speculating have gone into expert mock drafts. But now it’s time for Nick’s Very Late Mock Draft: 2020 Edition.

  1. Minnesota Timberwolves: Anthony Edwards (Georgia)
NBA Draft: Anthony Edwards on Michael Jordan, Warriors' advice

Coming off an impressive freshman season at the University of Georgia, Anthony Edwards is almost a lock to be taken first by Minnesota. Coming in at 6’5, 225 pounds, Edwards is an athletic freak with impressive driving ability and a knack for finding open shots. Edwards has the potential to become a better on-ball defender and a more consistent shooter once he arrives in the league.

2. Golden State Warriors: James Wiseman (Memphis)

Warriors: James Wiseman is a risk, but some arguments are disingenuous

With elite skilled paired with an other-worldly frame, James Wiseman is the perfect fit for the championship-contending Warriors. Wiseman clocks in at 7’1, with an astounding 7’6 wingspan, Wiseman has the perfect body for his work in the paint. Averaging 3 blocks per game in his freshman season, Wiseman has proven his ability to best an elite rim protector, when he doesn’t bite on pump fakes. Wiseman showcased his impressive athleticism and shooting touch for his size.

3. Charlotte Hornets: LaMelo Ball (USA)

NBA Mock Draft: LaMelo Ball goes No. 1 as Pistons trade up; Anthony Edwards falls to Hornets at No. 3 - CBSSports.com

The flashy younger brother of famed Lonzo and Liangelo Ball, Lamelo took the unconventional route, opting to play overseas instead of attending UCLA like his brothers. Lamelo has proven his uniqueness on the court since his high school days, with Harlem Globetrotter like playmaking ability. Listed at 6’7, Lamelo is a taller point guard with impressive ball-handling and touch around the rim. Charlotte has been in a rough patch for over a decade, and could look to take a huge gamble this year.

4. Chicago Bulls: Onyeka Okongwu (USC)

Knicks Draft: Is Onyeka Okongwu the answer for New York?

Reminiscent of Bam Adebayo, Okongwu is a 6’9 center who plays with the intensity and size of a 7-footer. An excellent finisher around the rim, he shows promise in his ability to create shots in the post. Added with his ability to defend on the ball and to protect the rim, Chicago can look to add another star player to Zach Lavine and hope to load up for the future. While Lamelo may go a pick before Okongwu, I think he is a better player.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers: Deni Avdija (Israel)

Bulls Rumors: Deni Avdija Source of 'Significant Buzz' Ahead of 2020 NBA Draft | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights

If one word comes to mind when you think of Deni Avdija, it’s versatility. A 6’9 wing with the playmaking abilities of a guard, Avdija has proven himself to be a one-of-a-kind prospect in this draft. He excels in his off-ball defense and feel on both sides of the ball.

6. Atlanta Hawks: Obi Toppin (Dayton)

Obi Toppin is Knicks' NBA Draft 2020 pipe dream

Sometimes extremely undervalued, Obi Toppin has proven to be a pure scorer. With an explosive bounce, Toppin can easily drive in the paint and finish with ease. Toppin has also shown skill in his long ball, despite not using it much. His main problem is his defense, which has a lot of room to improve, with the jumping ability to be an impressive shot-blocker down low.

7. Detroit Pistons: Patrick Williams (Florida State)

Positionless' Patrick Williams an intriguing draft prospect for Pistons

A 6’8 wing with playmaking abilities, Williams is an overall offensive threat. Efficient scoring at the rim, and a hustler on the defensive end, he can prove to be a major asset for an organization like Detroit trying to make a return. If he can improve on his spot-up shooting, he has the potential to be a major threat in the league.

8. New York Knicks: Tyrese Haliburton (Iowa State)

Detroit Pistons: The final case for taking Tyrese Halliburton in NBA Draft

A sharp playmaker, Haliburton has a great sense for the game. He excels at off-ball defense, as he always knows where the ball is. While he lacks the explosiveness you might find in other prospects, he makes up for it in his finesse and soft touch around the rim. An excellent shooter, Haliburton can prove to be a great pick for any team.

9. Washington Wizards: Killian Hayes (France)

Detroit Pistons: The final case for taking Killian Hayes in NBA draft

The crafty lefty from Florida, Hayes grew up in France and developed his unique game. A brilliant touch with his left hand, Hayes has proven that he is different than other prospects in this draft. With his improving touch beyond the arc, he can prove to be a great addition to Washington.

10. Phoenix Suns: Isaac Okoro (Auburn)

An impressive defender, Okoro has a knack for locking up the opposition both on and off the ball. He also shows promise in his finishing and dribbling abilities. If he can improve on his shooting ability, he can prove to be an all-around threat in the league. Okoro would be a great fit in Phoenix, and can learn from star guards Chris Paul and Devin Booker.

11. San Antonio Spurs: Kira Lewis Jr. (Alabama)

Ultra-fast Kira Lewis Jr. brings qualities Phoenix Suns need at point guard

An agile hustler, Lewis is a coach’s dream in a guard. An active defender on and off the ball that can pressure the ball-handler, he has a knack on either side of the ball. He has a smooth stroke, and is a great pick-and-roll playmaker. San Antonio is coming off of their first missed playoff appearance in 23 years, and is looking to return very quickly in a stacked western conference. Lewis might be the future piece they need to return to greatness.

12. Sacramento Kings: Saddiq Bey (Villanova)

Villanova's Saddiq Bey Announces He Will Test 2020 NBA Draft Waters | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights

A great 3-and-D wing, Bey has the potential to flourish in any system. His suffocating on-ball defense matched with his aware off-ball defense is the perfect recipe for an elite defender. Paired with his clean spot-up jumper, he is reminiscent of players like Klay Thompson and Jimmy Butler. In the Sacramento system he can perfectly match the tempo of De’Aaron Fox’s offense.

13. New Orleans Pelicans: Devin Vassell (Florida State)

2020 NBA Mock Draft: Five options the Knicks can take at No. 8 | amNewYork

Another excellent 3-and-D wing, Vassell is the second draftee out of Florida State so far this draft. Much like Saddiq Bey, Vassell excels at his on and off ball defense, paired with his perimeter shooting and hustle on both sides. While he has a tight handle, he may lack the explosiveness to beat defenders to the rim. Vassell can prove to be a major asset to a promising Pelicans team, filled with a young core led by Zion Williamson.

14. Boston Celtics: RJ Hampton (USA)

R.J. Hampton NBA Draft 2020 profile: Stats, bio, video of the guard - cleveland.com

An athletic guard, Hampton can prove to be a major gamble in this draft. Hampton opted to play overseas instead of at a university, where he displayed the craftiness to be an elite interior finisher. He has plenty of question marks however, as he lacks a consistent jumpshot, something that is a necessity in today’s league for guards.

15. Orlando Magic: Cole Anthony (North Carolina)

ACC Analyst on Cole Anthony: 'Some People' Don't Want Him 'For Whatever Reason' | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights

An explosive leader, Anthony brings his offensive prowess to the table. A great finisher around the rim with either hand, Anthony can finish around the best defenders. Paired with dynamic ball-handling ability and a smooth jumpshot, he can come into a system that needs a star and provide that role. Anthony can be perfect for Orlando, who can needs an elite guard to combo a rapidly-growing Nikola Vucevic.

16. Portland Trail Blazers: Tyrese Maxey (Kentucky)

Kentucky Guard Tyrese Maxey Declares For 2020 NBA Draft - SportzBonanza

While Portland has found their franchise leader in Damian Lillard, this doesn’t mean that they can’t pursue a great guard in Tyrese Maxey. An elite defender in all aspects, Maxey has a knack for getting the ball in his hands. A crafty finisher around the rim combined with an improving jumper, Maxey is a hustler and can prove himself in any system.

17. Minnesota Timberwolves: Josh Green (Arizona)

Milwaukee Bucks: Josh Green stands as intriguing NBA Draft wing target

Another impressive 3-and-D wing, Green is a great shooter off the catch and shoot. Coming off of a surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, hopefully he can prove that the injury is a non-factor in his development as a player.

18. Dallas Mavericks: Aleksej Pokusevski (Serbia)

How seriously should the Wizards consider Aleksej Pokusevski? - Bullets Forever

Probably the most unique prospect in this year’s draft, Pokusevski is a 7-footer who plays like a guard. With his 7’3 wingspan he dribbles, passes, and shoots like a premier guard in the league. The major downside to him is his skinny frame. If he can build muscle and grow into his body, he has the potential to be the next Kevin Durant. If there’s any team that likes to take tall Europeans, it’s the Dallas Mavericks so I can see him realistically being taken here.

19. Brooklyn Nets: Precious Achiuwa (Memphis)

Charlotte Hornets: How Precious Achiuwa Could be the Steal of the Draft

Achiuwa is a great paint player, with a nice touch around the rim and a knack for finding the ball on rebounds. Whether this pick is traded to Houston in a package for James Harden or not, Achiuwa is the best choice either way.

20. Miami Heat: Aaron Nesmith (Vanderbilt)

NBA prospect Aaron Nesmith on sharpshooting, returning from injury

An elite shooter, Nesmith shot an astounding 52.2% from deep range on 115 attempts. He can shoot off the catch, off the dribble, and anywhere in the gym. Nesmith is the perfect addition to a Miami team that fell just short of beating a stacked Laker team in the Finals.

21. Philadelphia 76ers: Jalen Smith (Maryland)

Jalen Smith - Men's Basketball - University of Maryland Athletics

Jalen Smith is a versatile big man that can shoot off the catch and finish around the rim. He handles the ball well for a 6’10 big, and excels at rebounding and shot blocking. While he may need to improve his defense while in the league, he’s a very promising prospect and should be a major target for Philly.

22. Denver Nuggets: Jaden McDaniels (Washington)

Milwaukee Bucks Draft Prospects: Jaden McDaniels Scouting Report - Brew Hoop

After an underwhelming freshman season after heavy recruitment, McDaniels is ready to prove that he is a threat in the league. Great on the offensive side, he can shoot, handle the ball, and is athletic. If he can work on his defense and finishing around the rim, he can prove to be a force for the Nuggets. The Nuggets, who already have a great duo in Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic, lack an elite wing, which McDaniels can fill the role for.

The Story Behind the Game: Dolphins vs Chargers

In his hit song Many Men, 50 Cent says, “Sunny days wouldn’t be special, if it wasn’t for rain. Joy wouldn’t feel so good, if it wasn’t for pain.” After a few cloudy years for the Miami Dolphins, the future is looking bright for Brian Flores and his brigade in sunny Florida.

Riding off their statement win over the red hot Cardinals, the Dolphins came back home and prepared for a week 10 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. This season the Chargers have served their fans heartbreak after heartbreak losing all their games by 7 points or less.

This week was no different with the game coming down to the final quarter, but the Dolphins were well in control all 4 quarters extending their win streak to 5 with a 29-21 victory at home.

The League is in good hands with Tua and Herbert:

All week this game was touted as a must watch matchup between two rookie quarterbacks– two top 10 picks at that in Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert. Suffice it to say no matter who your favorite team is, if you’re a football fan, this game and these quarterbacks put a smile on your face.

Let’s start with Tua, the man out of Ewa Beach, Hawaii. Tua served as the starting quarterback for Alabama in which he threw for 7442 yards and 87 touchdowns in his three years in college. Despite suffering a gruesome leg injury his last season at Alabama, the southpaw slinger was selected 5th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. When the season began Tua served as the backup to wily vet Ryan Fitzpatrick. But that changed as during their week 7 bye, the Dolphins named Tua Tagovailoa the starter for a week 8 game against the Rams. This move was perplexing and highly scrutinized as Fitzmagic was playing quite well. Nonetheless Tua came out and beat the Rams week 8 and followed that up with the aforementioned week 9 win over the Cardinals.

Bringing us to the week 10 victory in which Tua was 15/25 with 170 yards and 2 TD. Tagovailoa was very efficient this game and his ball had some real zip on it. He appeared to be very poise this game, eluding sacks often and making sharp throws rolling out the pocket. It may seem like a longshot right now but there’s a reason why many saw this guy as a Drew Brees prototype.

Next we have Justin Herbert, the prototype. Standing at a towering 6’6, Herbert presents as a model NFL pocket passer with a big arm. During his 4 years as a starter for the Oregon Ducks, Herbert amassed 10,541 yard and 95 touchdowns. Going into the draft there were many question marks regarding his lack of overall development at Oregon and whether or not he was NFL ready. The Chargers, who brought in Tyrod Taylor during the offseason decided to roll the dice with their 6th pick and selected Justin Herbert.

After a freak accident to starting QB Tyrod Taylor, Herbert was unexpectedly thrusted into the starting spot and boy did he deliver. Justin lit the league on fire putting up monster stats and placed his name in the cap for Rookie of the Year.

Week 10 was much like previous weeks in that Herb put up good numbers but his team just failed to win. The rookie QB tossed for 187 yards, 3 total touchdowns and one Int. Herbert continues to show off his great arm and surprising maturity– that withstanding this game was just lacking those important throws on key 3rd downs and that ultimately led to the Chargers demise.

Other Offensive Contributors

With Myles Gaskin out for the Dolphins, undrafted rookie out of Washington Salvon Ahmed stepped up and ran for 85 yards and a score. The Chargers have been desperate for a feature back ever since Austin Ekler went down week 4 and journeyman Kalen Ballage may be just that. The former Dolphin saw 18 carries for 68 yards and 34 more through the air.

Justin Herbert’s favorite target this season Keenan Allen caught a touchdown along with another TD catch from tight end Hunter Henry. The Dolphins also saw a tight end in Durham Smythe find the end zone and speedster Jakeem Grant secured a goaline touchdown catch.

Coaching & Defense

The separating factor for the Fins in this game was what it’s been all season, and that’s a masterclass in coaching and defensive scheme from coach Brian Flores.

Flores served as a defensive assistant on the Patriots from 2008-2018 where he clearly picked the great mind of Bill Belichick. Coach Flores’ heralded defensive acumen secured him a head coaching job in Miami taking over disliked Adam Gase. This season Flores has made stars out of players such as Emannuel Ogbah, Nik Needham and Jerome Baker.

This afternoon against the Chargers, Flores’ defense had 2 sacks, 8 QB hits, 6 pass deflections and one key interception from Xavien Howard.

Contrastly, Anthony Lynn is working with what on paper should be a top 10 defense but hardly ever performs as such. With players such as Casey Hayward, Desmond King, Derwin James(out for the season), Melvin Ingram, and Joey Bosa, one would expect this defense to reek havoc on the league.

During his time as the Chargers coach, Lynn has chided for his puzzling play calling and seems to be constantly under scrutiny for the teams inability to finish games. I’d be hard-pressed to find any player on that Chargers squad that willingly takes their foot off the gas late in the game– that being considered, the blame naturally seems to fall on the coach(es).

Both these teams have very bright futures with what seem to be their franchise quarterbacks. But, for my money, it’s the Dolphins who will quickly be on the radar of all competitors in this league. Tua Tagovailoa paired with Brian Flores and this defense are already a tough out for just about any team on any given Sunday.

A Healthy Steelers Team Should Scare Every AFC Team…

Sunday September 15th, 2019. We all thought the Steelers season was over. Ben Roethlisberger goes down with an injured elbow, that we later found out would need surgery. Unfortunately, the surgery ended Big Ben’s 2019 season, but somehow the Steelers were able to go 8-8 with a mix of QB play from players named Delvin “Duck” Hodges and Mason Rudolph. Their QB play mixed with amazing coaching from HC Mike Tomlin & Co and the amazing defense that led the NFL in takeaways led the Steelers to a .500 season. I’m writing this article to convince the people who don’t believe a healthy Steelers team will take the AFC by storm, that they will.

Lets break it down, flashback to 2018, the Steelers went 9-6-1 with horrible team chemistry. Their playoff hopes were shattered in Week 17. But that year, Ben Roethlisberger put up some of the best numbers in his career at age 36. He led the league in passing attempts and completions (452 CMP & 675 ATT), led the league in passing yards (5,129), and led the league in passing yards per game with 320.6!
Yes, Big Ben had Antonio Brown and a healthy JuJu Smith-Schuster, but this shows Ben still has a lot left in the tank. Not to mention, in 2018 he played and started in all 16 games. If this doesn’t convince you why teams in the AFC should be scared, let me break it down even more.

It’s not going to be all Ben and the offense. The Steelers defense is extremely scary, we are talking like Top 5 scary. OLB TJ Watt just finished his 3rd year in the NFL and put up career numbers. 14.5 sacks, 55 tackles, 14 TFL, and 36 QB hits, 36! Not to mention, they now have, rookie last year going into his second year, MLB Devin Bush. Who tore it up last season and will continue to do so in 2020. Last but not least, S Minkah Fitzpatrick. Minkah was INSANE last year and put the whole league on notice. He was tied for 2nd in the NFL for INT’s. It’s going to be his 2nd year in the scheme and like Watt, Bush, and Co. he is going to tear it up. Watt (25), Bush (21), and Minkah (23), are going to lead this defense to once again be a Top 5 in the NFL. If those three players don’t sell you on defense don’t forget about, CB Joe Haden, DE Camron Hayward, DE Stephon Tuitt, OLB Bud Dupree, and many more. This defense is going to be scary. Plus, if the Steelers draft some defense in this years draft that will help even more.

Now, if you are still reading and your still not convinced, let’s me try to sway your opinion some more.
JuJu and James Connor, both key parts of the offense, struggled to stay on the field last season. Next year will be different, I have a feeling and know they both will be back and better then ever next season. WR James Washington, who proved himself last year as a rookie, will be in his second year and make big strides in that offense.
The new addition of TE Eric Ebron will give Big Ben a red zone threat and another great athletic weapon. The OL is still one of the best in the league, the depth at RB will help Ben and Co. a lot, and the draft picks the Steelers have for 2020 could and will come in handy. The Steelers draft smart, real smart, I wouldn’t be surprised if they made this team even better for 2020.

Let’s look at the team.

(Not the full 53 man roster)

OFFENSE:

QB: Ben Roethlisberger

QB: Duck Hodges

RB: James Connor

RB: Jaylen Samuels

RB: Benny Snell Jr.

FB: Derek Watt

WR1: JuJu Smith-Schuster

WR2: James Washington

WR3: Diontae Johnson

WR4: Ryan Switzer

TE1: Eric Ebron

TE2: Vance McDonald

TE3: Zach Gentry

LT: Alejandro Villanueva

LG: Matt Feiler

C: Maurice Pouncey

RG: David DeCastro

RT: Zach Banner

DEFENSE:

DE: Stephon Tuitt

DT: Chris Wormley

DE: Cameron Hayward

OLB: TJ Watt

ILB: Devin Bush

ILB: Vince Williams

OLB: Bud Dupree

CB: Joe Haden

FS: Minkah Fitzpatrick

SS: Terrell Edmunds

CB: Steven Nelson

Draft Needs: SS, ILB, and WR

SS: Terrell Edmunds is more of a backup, if the Steelers can land a Grant Delpit if he falls that would be perfect.

ILB: Devin Bush is not the problem here, in fact he is part of the solution. He is part of the Young Big 3 (Watt, Minkah, and Bush). The problem is actually Vince Williams, if the Steelers can get a guy like Troy Dye. That would be perfect scenario for the Steelers.

WR: This WR class is deep, JuJu and Washington are studs, Johnson and Switzer have potential, but improving the guys around them would help Ben a lot.

The defense mixed with a healthy offense next year is going to be insane. The Steelers division is pretty tough, but their are only a handful of teams that are on/above the Steelers level. (i.e. Ravens, Chiefs, and Bills)

With a good or bad draft this team is still insane and ready to roll. They made some great underrated moves this offseason and they are going to be scary.

Especially now that their are 7 playoff teams per conference. The Steelers have a real legitimate shot at making the playoffs and everyone knows anything can happen in the playoffs.

If I haven’t convinced you yet, then just watch. I have done all I could trying to convince the haters who think the Steelers won’t be a threat next season.

And hey, Bill O’Brian might want to move JJ Watt for the right price. He moved DHop for a bag of chip. Why not unite all the 3 Watt brothers on the same team. 😉

What if: The 49ers Drafted Aaron Rodgers over Alex Smith in the 2005 NFL Draft

If you are familiar with NFL history of the past 20 years, you’re probably familiar with the infamous 2005 NFL Draft number one pick decision. If you aren’t here’s a quick rundown.

The 2004 49ers finished the season 2-14 with the worst record in the NFL, clinching the number one overall pick with two more losses than Dolphins and Browns who finished 4-12. This ended the 2-year tenure of Head Coach Dennis Erickson leaving an empty 3 years on his original 5 year deal with the team. Going into the 2005 season with new Head Coach Mike Nolan, the 49ers’ main offseason target and need on their roster was the Quarterback position. In the 2004 season, the 9ers had 3 QB’s make appearances, Tim Rattay, Ken Dorsey, and Cody Pickett. Besides Rattay, who threw as many touchdowns as interceptions (10), the other two threw more interceptions than touchdowns.

Having the first overall pick, they realized the best and most obvious avenue to snag a QB would be right there in the draft. The two guys the 49ers focused on to be their next franchise QB, in a historic franchise that had rostered the likes of Joe Montana and Steve Young, were Alex Smith out of the University of Utah and Aaron Rodgers out of the University of California Berkeley. Many thought that the obvious choice would be Aaron Rodgers considering that he grew up a huge 49ers fan in Chico, Ca and went to college 30 minutes away from the 49ers then home, Candlestick Park. Unfortunately the 49ers went with Smith at number one, letting Rodgers slide to number 24 overall and the Green Bay Packers.

Reflecting on the decision the then Head Coach, Mike Nolan, said that the team decided to go with Smith because he was a safe pick that wouldn’t create drama, whereas Rodgers was “very cocky, very confident, arrogant”.

Looking back at it the obvious right choice would have been Rodgers. Smith was/is mediocre at best, eventually losing his job in 2012 when injured. His backup, Colin Kaepernick, lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl in Smith’s absence. Smith went on to have a couple of okay years on the Chiefs, where he threw screens to the RB’s or dumped it off to Travis Kelce most of the time, and then to the Redskins where he had a gruesome leg injury, he is still recovering from with his career still in question. On the other hand, after being mentored by the great Brett Favre for 3 years, Rodgers became the Packers starter in 2008. Two years later he beat the Steelers in the 2010 Super Bowl in which he won Super Bowl MVP. Along with that, thus far in his career, he has won 2 MVP’s, been selected to 8 Pro Bowls, and has been known as one of the most talented QB’s in the NFL.

But what if the 49ers made the obvious choice in 2005, and grabbed the local Aaron Rodgers with the first overall pick. Alex Smith would not fall long, picked by the Cleveland Browns at 3rd overall. He would be replacing former 49er, Jeff Garcia, and have a poor season with no talent to support him on the roster. He would continue to struggle until 2007 when he was replaced by 1st round pick, Brady Quinn. With no real legacy as a Brown, he would just be another name on the infamous Browns Quarterback Jersey. He would then sign with the Jaguars in 2008, have some average statistical seasons, and play well enough to get an extension. They sneak into the playoffs in 2010 winning the division with 11 wins thanks to a great season by Maurice Jones-Drew. Eventually, he is replaced by rookie Blake Bortles in 2014, midseason. The rest of his career he has Josh McCown Status, bouncing around as a good backup, eventually retiring in 2017.

With Aaron Rodgers not available at 23rd overall, the Packers pass on a QB and stick with Favre. Favre stays with the team, not threatened by a young and promising backup. Thankfully for them, Packers fans never have to see him in Vikings Purple, as he retires for good after the 2010 season. The Packers still win the 2010 Super Bowl, as Farve rides off into the sunset. In 2011 the Packers sign Vince Young to a 2-year deal, and draft similar style player, Colin Kaepernick in the first round. Young is replaced mid season in 2011 by Kaepernick, who is very happy to play for his favorite team as a child. They win the division with 11 wins, but have a quick playoff exit. They win the Super Bowl in 2014 thanks to an explosive offense of Eddie Lacy, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, rookie breakout WR Davante Adams, and the dual threat Kaepernick. Kaepernick has trouble with injuries, and after a bad 2016 season, the Packers draft Mitch Trubisky 2nd Overall. He starts off good, but with aging weapons, declines as they never win the division the rest of the decade, thanks to Matt Nagy’s amazing offence with Patrick Mahomes who they get with the 4th pick, after their first choice in the draft is taken by the Packers.

Finally the 49ers. After 2 seasons Rodgers looks very promising, but is held back by head coach Mike Nolan, who won’t accept his personality and moxy. He was against drafting Rodgers but the front office overruled him to choose the Golden Bears product. He is fired after the 2006 season, and the 49ers hire USC head coach, Pete Carroll. He is also local, and is familiar with the team as the former defensive coordinator. He loves Rodgers play style, and the Carroll-Rodgers tandem is the next great player coach relationship. In 2007 with all pro rookie Patrick Willis, a big season for Frank Gore, breakout rookie WR Jacoby Jones, that the 49ers trade up to get, and a huge season from Rodgers, the 49ers win the division with 12 wins. They go to the Super Bowl but lose to the Patriots. They draft burner DeSean Jackson in 2008 Draft, who Rodgers has instant chemistry with considering they were both Cal Berkley Alums. They also sign Terrell Suggs to pair with Willis. They lose in the divisional round after winning the division. In 2009 they win the Super Bowl, as Rodgers adds another weapon in rookie Michael Crabtree. Off season addition, Brian Dawkins was a key piece in the run. They go on to win the 2012 and 2015 Super Bowls, as Rodgers is known as the best QB in the NFL. They struggle in 2016 as their talent gets old and Patrick Willis retires. In 2017 they have a great draft adding TJ Watt, Joe Mixon, and Chris Godwin. They also sign Calais Campbell and resign DeSean Jackson. In 2017 they have a great season but lose to the electric Falcons in the NFC Championship. The Falcons lose that Super Bowl as Brady gets hurt, but backup Jimmy Garoppolo steps in to win Super Bowl MVP and take the Lombardi Trophy. In 2018 the 49ers draft Courtland Sutton, and redeem the 2007 Super Bowl loss, beating the now Brady-less Patriots lead by Jimmy Garoppolo in the Super Bowl. In 2019 Rodgers gets hurt, and backup Nick Mullens leads the 49ers to a divisional round loss.

To recap:

Alex Smith-NFL Journeyman, 1 Playoff Appearance as a starter.

Packers-Win two Super Bowls and there is no friction between their coach and QB compared to what happened in actuality. Farve rides off into the sunset in 2010 and Kaepernick leads them to a 2014 Super Bowl win.

49ers-Sign Pete Carroll, and committ to excellence with star QB Aaron Rodgers. They win 4 Super Bowls and aren’t finished.

Although the 49ers are now in an amazing position now with their current roster and Jimmy Garoppolo under center, they would have had much more success if they chose Rodgers over Smith in 2005. In the end it won’t matter when the 49ers beat the Packers on Sunday to clinch a Super Bowl birth, but it’s interesting to think what could have been.

How The Oakland A’s can win the AL West…

The Houston Astros were smacked with a huge punishment today by the MLB. The Houston Astros were handed this suspension due to them stealing signs in their 2017 WS run, in which they won. The Astros had to fire their GM and Manager, were fined $5,000,000, and were stripped their 2020 & 2021, 1st & 2nd Round Picks. This doesn’t seem like a big punishment, but it is. Losing their Manager who was highly respected around the league and was presumed to be a Top 5 Manager in the MLB, is a big hit to this organization. Which, will lead to them not winning as many games and living up to expectations. They already have rotation and bullpen problems. In my eyes, the AL West is wide open and I believe the back to back 97 game winning and 2nd place in the AL West two years in a row, Oakland Athletics can take it.

The A’s won 97 games last season without Ace LHP Sean Manaea, who wasn’t called up until September due to shoulder surgery. They also only had half a season of up & coming Ace RHP Frankie Montas. Hopefully, with full seasons out of these two the A’s can crack 100 wins. Not to mention, reinforcements from No. 10 prospect in the MLB, LHP Jesús Luzardo and No. 31 prospect LHP A.J. Puk.

Lets address the A’s biggest reoccurring problem, pitching. The starting rotation looks to be set with, Manaea, Montas, Luzardo, Fiers, and Puk. Although, I think Puk should be permanently moved to the bullpen to embrace a Josh Hader esque role. Puk would be an amazing arm, he throws absolute heat and combined with his devastating off speed. He can be a very good relief pitcher. He also would be a good option to go to in a tight game in the 8th inning, in a set up man role to Closer Liam Hendricks. Lets go back to the rotation, if Puk is moved to the bullpen it would leave an open spot in the rotation. This is where, Arizona Diamondbacks, LHP Robbie Ray comes in. He is currently being shopped by the team and would be a great addition to the squad. Yes, last season he didn’t put up the best numbers, but remember he pitched his homes games at arguably the most hitter friendly park in the league. If I was in the A’s position, I would give up either 2B Jorge Mateo or Franklin Barreto, along with OF Dustin Fowler and Single A pitcher.

Now with the Rotation set:

1.) LHP Sean Manaea

2.) RHP Frankie Montas

3.) LHP Robbie Ray

4.) RHP Mike Fiers

5.) LHP Jesús Luzardo.

Lets look at the bullpen. Currently it looks pretty much set, led by closer RHP Liam Hendricks. Followed by, RHP Yusmeiro Petit, LHP AJ Puk, RHP Joakim Soria, RHP Chris Bassitt, and LHP Jake Diekman. Soria is bound to have a bounce back season, Bassitt will fill the needed righty long relief role the A’s desperately needed last season, Petit is a work horse, Diekman is a great crafty lefty who can pitch to lefties and righties, and the elite closer Liam Hendricks. Lou Trivino is not listed because depending on his spring training if he improves and goes back to looking like his rookie year, where he posted a 2.2 ERA. If he goes back to looking like last season he will find himself in AAA, fixing and working through his issues. So there is one, possibly two, spots open in the bullpen.

The one spot that is confirmed open, should be filled by a righty arm. First name that come to mind is, Pittsburgh Pirates RHP Keone Kela. Last season he posted a 2.12 ERA, with a 1.2 WAR, 33 SO, 11 BB, and went 2-0. He has been rumored to be on the trade block and would be a perfect fit with the A’s. He is a ground ball pitcher and his play style mixed with the A’s ELITE defensive infield, would be a match made in heaven.

Next, lets say RHP Lou Trivino has a poor spring training and is sent to AAA. The A’s have to fill that bullpen spot. No one better than, Kansas City Royals LHP Tim Hill. Last season he posted a 3.63 ERA, 39 SO, 13 BB, and went 2-0. The Royals didn’t use him correctly last season but he would be a good option for the A’s. The 28 year old, has 5 years of control, he doesn’t hit the free agent market until 2025. The A’s like having long term control of their players.

So let’s look at the bullpen:

CP: R Liam Hendricks

RP: L A.J. Puk

RP: R Yusmeiro Petit

RP: R Keone Kela

RP: R Joakim Soria

RP: R Chris Bassitt

RP: L Jake Diekman

RP: L Tim Hill

That would be a pretty good rotation and bullpen. It would for surely fix the A’s pitching problems and help them win the division.

Finally lets talk about the Lineup. The A’s have a lot of talent in their lineup. 3B Matt Chapman, 1B Matt Olson, SS Marcus Semien, CF Ramón Laureano, and RF Stephen Piscotty. Also, No. 28 prospect in the MLB C Sean Murphy and LF power hitter Mark Canha.

If you didn’t know the MLB expanded the rosters to a 26 man roster vs 25 man. So let’s talk about the lineup.

Lineup:

1.) R SS Marcus Semien

2.) R 3B Matt Chapman

3.) L Matt Olson

4.) R DH Khris Davis

5.) R CF Ramón Laureano

6.) R LF Mark Canha

7.) R RF Stephen Piscotty

8.) R 2B Chad Pinder

9.) R C Sean Murphy

Bench:

IF R Franklin Barreto

C L Austin Allen

OF/1B L Seth Brown

UTL L Tony Kemp

I really like this lineup. Lots of power, contact, and speed. I really think this is going to be a successful lineup. Lots of depth and looks very well rounded. I really like C Sean Murphy, great defense and athletiscm. Hits for power and great contact, the kid is a stud.

All in all, how do you think the A’s will do this season? I think 100+ wins and has a good chance to take the AL West.

What do the Golden State Warriors do from here?

The Warriors haven’t started out like they would want too. Coming in to the season, the Warriors knew star G/F Klay Thompson was going to be out for a major part of the year with a Torn ACL. Then, the injuries started to pile up. PF Draymond Green started to suffer minor injuries almost every game. Superstar PG Steph Curry suffered a injury to his hand which would lead him to be benched for 3-4 months. New Warrior, D’Angelo Russell, started to also deal with hand and ankle injuries, the injuries were minor but began to take a tole. At this point the Warriors embraced the fact that it wasn’t their year and it was time to tank.

So that bring us to today, where the team is 9-30 and looks like they will get a top 5 pick in the draft. So what are the ideal blueprints for the offseason, here in this article I will be breaking it down.

Trade D’Angelo Russell

This is very realistic. Russell won’t blend with Curry and Klay. Them both play PG and SG throwing Russell in the mix forces Klay to SF which makes them run a small ball lineup. So the Warriors need to trade him. Here is the deal:

Warriors Receive: C Karl Anthony-Towns and SF Robert Covington

Timberwolves Receive: PG/SG D’Angelo Russell and 2020 1st Round Pick

This gives the Warriors a way more balanced lineup. They get the superstar center the team needs and 3&D SF. Team is way more dangerous now. With KAT that gives the Warriors 3 legitimate scores. Curry, Klay, and KAT will give any team 20 a night, RoCo will give a team 10-15, same with Draymond. This moves give the Warriors more depth. The Warriors would be willing to trade the 1st Round Pick because of the fact they will most likely be drafting C James Wiseman.

Now, the Warriors will go out and sign F Andre Iguodala. He has said he wants to return to the Warriors for any kind of money. So that gives the Warriors more depth which they need.

Now the Lineup looks like:

PG: Steph Curry

SG: Klay Thompson

SF: Robert Covington

PF: Draymond Green

C: Karl Anthony-Towns

6th: F Eric Paschell

7th: C Kevon Looney

8th: F Andre Iguodala

9th: G Alec Burks

10th: G Ky Bowman

11th: F Alen Smailagic

12th: G Jordan Poole

13th: G Jacob Evans III

14th: G Damien Lee

15th: F Omari Spellman

That’s a very good lineup. A good mix of guards and forwards, vets and young players, shooting and defense. I think if the Warriors make the move for Karl Anthony-Towns. They will go back to being a Top 5 seed in the West. Thoughts?

Why Matt Rhule is the answer for the Giants inability to be an actual functioning football team

After two seasons with head coach Pat Shurmer which resulted in a combined record of 9-23 , New York Giants team president John Mara and Chairman Steve Tisch announced the organization will be moving on from Shurmer to the delight of many Giants fans. This will be the teams third time searching for a new head coach in the last five years and with many teams doing the same this offseason, the Giants may have the clearest decision of them all; Hiring Baylor University head coach Matt Rhule as the new leader of the New York Football Giants. To preface, after Baylor’s Sugar Bowl loss, Rhule stated that he would like to return to the university but in previous interviews he has expressed interest into coaching in the NFL.

Rhule born and raised in New York City is no stranger to the Giants organization considering he was an assistant coach when Tom Coughlin coached the team in 2012. During Rhule’s time with the team, now General Manager Dave Gettleman was a personnel analyst meaning they have worked together before. In a recent interview with 247sports, president John Mara spoke on his ideal candidate for the open coaching position stating, “I’m looking for leadership that’s the big thing going forward…. somebody who’s gonna help us with our football reorganization we’re in the process of undergoing right now.” Coach Rhule is very well acquainted with the struggles of building a team from the ground up and it is a task he has proved to be very capable of executing. After his stint as an assistant to Tom Coughlin, Rhule was named the head coach of Temple University an American Athletic Conference school that was never taken seriously in the world of College Football. In his first season as head coach Matt Rhule’s Owl’s were once again a laughingstock going 2-10 in a disastrous year. But, by all accounts Matt Rhule is truly a leader of men and the following season he recruited some new players that fit his vision and got seemingly all of the team to buy into his coaching style. That 2014 season Temple went 11-2 and the winning never stopped, 2015 10-4, and 2016 10-3.

When Rhule arrived at Baylor in 2017, the program was in the midst of a rape scandal which caste a dark cloud over the University as a whole. This brings us to this past year 2019 where Matt Rhule in his third year as Baylor head coach, led his team to an 11-2 season and an appearance in the Sugar Bowl. Rhule who took over his second distraught football organization proved once again that he is a true leader of men and effective rebuilder. When speaking to the New York Post, Giants safety Sean Chandler stated, “He’s able to connect with all his players, so that just makes you want to be able to play for him that much harder.” It is clear that coach Rhule garners respect from his players with his “no nonsense” authority that can put a team that has lost hope back in check. Yes the most prolific example of “no nonsense” coaching is Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots but a more suitable example is Miami Dolphins first year coach Brian Flores. When Flores took over the reigns the Dolphins to NFL fans were simply a poor team “tanking for Tua” a team that traded superstars such as tackle Laremy Tunsil and Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Although Flores’ Dolphins finished 5-11, Flores similarly to Matt Rhule during his time at both Temple and Baylor, got his players to buy into his system and play for him in the midst of a lost season.

Now, speaking on what goes on in between the hash marks, coach Rhule has spent time coaching on both sides of the ball and has a history of bringing his prefered staff as well as his schemes to the team in which he inherits. Those with high understanding of the wonderous game that is football are aware that it is a monumental task for a young quarterback like Daniel Jones to learn the new offensive scheme that a new coach may bring. This may lead some to believe that the firing of Pat Shurmer may inadvertently hinder the development of the young prospect. So what’s the kicker? Well, Pat Shurmer and Matt Rhule have very similar offensive schemes. Shurmer who came from the Minnesota Vikings brought with him a ‘power spread’ offense with run pass option concepts he picked up on from his time in Philly with Chip Kelly in 2014. Matt Rhule in his three years with Baylor ran a ‘zone spread’ offense which is very similar to what Danny Dimes ran in the 2019 season. But, where the power spread implements a power running game, Rhule’s zone spread provides a zone rushing game which utilizes the athletic ability of a teams running backs. With star second year running back Saquon Barkley having somewhat of a sophmore slump, many in New York pointed to the fact that Shurmer’s power run game does not capitalize on Barkleys explosive one cut ability. If Rhule is in fact next up for the Giants, Barkley will once again excel thereby relieving some pressure from developing quarterback Daniel Jones.

So, Dear New York Giants, if you want your future head coach to be a true galvanizing leader, a proven rebuilder, a man who knows your system, and a coach who is going to bring respect to your organization: hire Matt Rhule.

6 Potential Landing Spots for GSW Guard D’Angelo Russell

The Dynasty everyone thought couldn’t be stopped has started 1-2. Losing KD, Iggy, Livingston, and Klay to injury has hurt the team. In the KD sign and trade the Warriors were able to get D’Angelo Russell. Everyone, including me, thought that this team would be unstoppable. Well that isn’t the case. Yes, it is still early, but this combo of Curry and D’Lo doesn’t work. Offensively or Defensively. So here are 6 teams that could trade for Guard D’Angelo Russell.

#1 Minnesota Timberwolves

T-Wolves Receive: PG D’Angelo Russell and a 2020 2nd Round Pick

Warriors Receive: SF/SG Andrew Wiggins and SF Robert Covington

For both teams this makes sense. Wiggins has struggled with the T-Wolves and Covington would be filthy good off the Warriors bench. D’Lo and T-Wolves Center Karl Anthony-Towns (KAT) are best friends. This would be prefect for both teams.

#2 Detroit Pistons

Pistons receive: PG D’Lo, C Willie Cauley-Stein, and a 2020 2nd round pick

Warriors receive: C Andre Drummond, PG Derrick Rose, and SG Luke Kennard

I think this is a fair trade for both sides. Gives the Warriors a true center, a great backup PG, and a good SG. Starting lineups for both teams would be.

#3 Phoenix Suns

Suns Receive: PG D’Lo and (swaps 1st with GSW)

Warriors Receive: SF Kelly Oubre Jr, PF Dario Saric, and (swaps 1st with PHX)

D’Lo and Devin Booker are also best friends. So the Suns would likely do this trade. The Warriors would do it because they get a good SF and a solid backup PF. It provides bench depth for the Warriors and the suns future PG.

#4: Miami Heat

Heat Receive: PG D’Lo, C Willie Cauley-Stein, and a 2020 2nd Round Pick

Warriors Receive: SG Dion Waiters, C Bam Adebayo,PF James Johnson, 2021 1st Round Pick

This would be a great trade for both sides. The Miami Heat get another player to help Jimmy Butler. The Warriors get 2 vets to help their depth and a young center.

#5 Milwaukee Bucks

Bucks Get: PG D’Lo and (swap 2020 1st with GSW)

Warriors Get: SF Khris Middleton and (swap 2020 1st with MIL)

This trade makes a lot of sense because the Warriors would get a SF who would fit their team. The Bucks would get a young PG to play next to Giannis.

#6 Philadelphia 76ers

76ers Receive: PG D’Lo and (swap 2020 1st with GSW)

Warriors Receive: SF Tobias Harris and (swap 2020 1st with 76ers)

This makes sense because the 76ers need another shooter. Simmons can run SF for them, while D’Lo runs PG. Warriors also get Harris. Which helps them at their gap at SF.
